Philosophy
Psychotherapy is always conducted from a particular point of view or “orientation.” This is a critical factor in choosing a therapist, as the orientation of your practitioner will greatly influence how your problems are understood and approached, how long you are likely to be in treatment, the nature of the relationship that is forged and what the ultimate goals of your work together are likely to be.
My point of view in providing psychotherapy is derived from Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Although my early graduate training was primarily in a psychodynamic orientation, where the influence of the past is considered paramount in understanding and addressing current problems in living, I came to believe that these insights, while valuable, are not sufficient to enable people to make the kind of real and timely changes they seek in their lives. CBT, by contrast, provides both a framework for conceptualizing emotional distress as well as time-tested tools for helping people reduce or eliminate this distress in intuitive and effective ways.
